Excuse me but I’m pissed off.
Jerry Buell , a ‘Mount Dora High School’ , teacher of the year ( I’d hate to see the rest!) who was suspended following allegations of anti-gay postings on facebook is back teaching class again after the investigation by the school board found that Buell had not violated the school boards ethics policy
He wrote on July 25th on facebook : “I was watching the news, eating dinner when the story about New York okaying same-sex unions came on and I almost threw up.” He added: “If they want to call it a union, go ahead. But don’t insult a man and woman’s marriage by throwing it in the same cesspool of whatever.”
When his Facebook friends retaliated against his comments, Buell published a second post: “If one doesn’t like the most recently posted opinion, based on Biblical principals and God’s law, then go ahead and un-friend me. I’ll miss you like I miss my kidney stone from 1994.”
Buell makes no apologies for his comments and says he was exercising his first amendment rights (yes, just like the kkk)
The Lake County School District guidelines on teachers use of social media, warn teachers, if they “feel angry or passionate about a subject, it may not be the time to share your thoughts in a post” and to “delay posting until you are calm and clearheaded.”
But following an investigation he is back, teaching in Lake County.
However the school district are now separately investigating whether Buell may have violated the constitutional separation of church and state.
On his school webpage, Buell wrote that he tries to “teach and lead my students as if Lake Co. Schools had hired Jesus Christ himself,” the Sentinel reports.
His syllabus also said: “I teach God’s truth, I make very few compromises. If you believe you may have a problem with that, get your schedule changed, ’cause I ain’t changing!” On a separate document, he also said the classroom was his “mission field.”
Harry Mihet, an attorney for maitland based ultra consevative Liberty Council, represents Buell and said that the school district believes Buell may have crossed the church/state line.
Mihet stated “We need the time to investigate the school’s claim and the school’s position to decide whether or not the school is on the correct Constitutional footing.”
The attorney said the webpage has since been removed and that Buell has been instructed to remove some parts of his syllabus.
Mihet has added that “His views were the views of a majority of Americans and certainly of a majority of Floridians”
Really? Check the Gallop poll done on the subject its shows the opposite. Maybe in the bigoted Florida you live in it’s that way but not in the real loving world I live in.
“I would hope a teacher would be there to help them and not hurt them,” said Michael Slaymaker, president of the Orlando Youth Alliance, the local support group for homosexual youth.
The ACLU are also standing beside Buell defending his free speech rights. I understand their position but at the same time as we are defending one persons rights to free speech we have to protect the gay students who might be subject to his form of education and prejudice. Then there is the knock on effect of his students that leave his class with the idea that it’s ok to gay bash because my teacher says so. Or the people following the case who now want to fight against gay marriage and oppress gay people. We also have laws against hate crime it’s just a shame they aren’t strong enough. Free speech has consequences and the people it impacts need protection too!
Why are we allowing this man to continue to teach in our schools ? Is anyone protesting against this man? I only see support, from the narrow minded bible bashing sheep out there.
