At 11.55pm Friday 24th June 2011 New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law that gives gay and lesbian couples the right to marry. The vote passed 33-29. New York, which gave birth to the gay rights movement in the 1960s, will become the sixth state to allow same-sex marriages. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire and the District of Columbia also grant same-sex marriage licenses.
Cuomo signed the bill five minutes before midnight which will go into effect July 24.
A huge street party at the Stonewall Inn was understandably jubilant at the result.
Lady Gaga responded “I can’t stop crying. We did it kids,” The singer had urged her 11 million Twitter fans previously, to contact New York Senators in support of the bill.
This is a momentous occasion. I just hope it lasts longer than it did in California. It shouldn’t be possible to revoke. This should be a fundamental right of all people.
